What doulas provide
- Provide emotional support: Offer companionship, listen to fears and concerns, and provide reassurance.
- Educate and advocate: Explain the common physical and emotional signs of dying to reduce fear and confusion, and advocate for the person’s wishes to be heard.
- Offer practical assistance: Help with advance care planning, document legacy projects (like creating memory books or organizing recipes), and can provide respite for primary caregivers.
- Support after death: Assist families with the initial stages after death, such as helping with washing and dressing the deceased, and guiding them through initial grief and funeral planning.
Key differences from hospice
- Medical vs. non-medical: Hospice care focuses on the medical needs of the dying person, while a death doula provides non-medical, holistic support.
- Complementary role: Doulas often work alongside hospice teams, filling gaps in care where personalized emotional, practical, and spiritual support is needed.
